A Message From Kari Rollins D.O.


Many of my patients and students have been asking me what they can do to avoid becoming infected with the corona virus. The first thing I tell them is to avoid being afraid. Fear is in emotion that paralyzes the immune system. Once a person goes into fight or flight, the whole immune system shuts down. When the body goes into fight or flight our circulation move from our internal organs to our muscles to “fight or flee”. Normal body functions such as cell repair, digestion, filtering of the blood of toxins, and protecting our body from infection are halted while we prepare to fight or flee. I tell them one of the most powerful ways to avoid illness is to practice breathing from the navel, not the chest, and to listen to their inner dialogue that is often a root cause of fear. Sometimes people ask, “ Isn’t there just a supplement I can take?” Of course supplements and medications can help with infectious but I know the most powerful methods of preventing disease are the things we do all day long. How we sit, stand, breathe, and think has more impact than pills. And the practice of yoga has a multitude of exercises, breath practices, and meditations that are excellent and so appropriate for the current pandemic we are facing. 
To address our current challenge of staying healthy Raja Yoga will be offering online yoga classes that emphasize breath practices to help you stay calm, physical exercises that build strength, release tension and move circulation, and meditations that uplift your spirit and inspire wisdom and courage. These classes will be suitable to all levels of ability as each person can modify to suit their needs and level of ability. We will draw from many different yoga traditions, styles, and philosophies. Our purpose is to not only improve health but to raise the consciousness of our community. We hope to build a strong support system for each other and a community of respect and loving kindness. If you have visited us before you will register the same as you would for an in-person class. If you are new you can register through our website or through the Mindbody Online application. Once registered you will receive an email with a link 30 min prior to class or a few min before class if you sign up less than 30 min prior. Please sign up early and give yourself plenty of time to get logged in and ready for class. If you have not used Zoom before please follow these instructions to test.
